Getting Started with Your PCN Management Audit

As a Primary Care Network leader and CEO, I am all about the fundamentals.

This is the work that may not be seen necessarily as exciting, and it's often the work that other people take for granted, but it's all about making sure we have a solid foundation to work from.

When the basics are in place, this enables us to do bigger and better things, creates clarity and consistency and supports a positive organisational culture.

In this blog, we have created a simple audit that you can download to help you audit your approach to leadership and management, and identify what is working well and where there may be areas for improvement. It's just a starter for ten, and I encourage you, as I always do, to leave what doesn't resonate.

At THC Primary Care, we are increasingly receiving a number of enquiries from networks that are experiencing issues related to trust, conflict, commitment, accountability, and / or results and performance.

These also happen to be the five key reasons why even the most effective teams can fail, as highlighted in Patrick Lencioni’s five dysfunctions of a team.

This framework is designed to help teams identify and overcome the five dysfunctions that can prevent them from being effective. I discussed this on the General Practice Podcast below.

This blog was also inspired by a session delivered by Robert McCartney, Dr Najib Seedat and Ben Gowland, who we collaborate with on the New to GP Partnership Programme.

Whilst the challenges within a GP partnership and a Primary Care Network hold different levels of risks and responsibility, there are also a lot of commonalities.

At THC, we have taken the five dysfunctions of a team one step further and have provided you with some specific examples, which will enable you to better reflect, build on these and actively address the current issues which may exist within your own network.

It's not a tool to be used on a one-off basis but a regular way to review and make sense of what is happening in your network and with your own performance.

✅ Review and amend the list below to ensure the language resonates with you and your network.

✅ Print the list off or electronically share it with your network’s leadership and management team (you can even turn this into your own electronic survey).

✅ Answer the questions individually and then discuss your responses as a team.

✅ Create an action plan and identify the priorities you need to work on in the next 90 days. Don’t try to address everything all at once.

✅ If your network’s leadership and management position is good, this exercise could form part of your PCN annual review.

I would also remind you to lead by example and remember that the need for compromise is highly likely.
