Why I Chose a 26-Year-Old Company Over the New Money

At THC, we provide resources for primary care network leaders, and part of that is being clear about who we choose to work with and why.

Lexacom is the first official sponsor of The Business of Healthcare podcast, and I reached out to them.

I first came into contact with Lexacom when I was the interim manager at Maidenhead PCN, and we put on an AI showcase attended by over 100 clinical colleagues and practice managers.

Every interaction I have had with Andrew Whiteley, their founder and CEO, has been really positive, and he has a great sense of humour. But more importantly, I know the technology works, and I know they have raving fans as users.

So, I invited Andrew onto the podcast, put him in the hot seat, and asked him the questions I know you want answered when you are thinking about purchasing a new tool, especially in this era of AI.

There is no shortage of technology companies in primary care right now. Many are well funded, highly visible, and very good at telling you how transformational they are.

Every platform is encouraging you to use AI, but at the same time, the people on the other end of your work often do not want you to. They want to know that you did it yourself.

Both of those positions are reasonable, and I do not think the answer is to pick a side. What is needed is a measured approach: knowing when to use the tools available to make you quicker and more efficient and knowing where the human touch has to stay. It is my belief that Lexacom strikes this balance well.

What Lexacom actually does

Lexacom is widely known for digital dictation, but it does far more than that.

  • Speech recognition anywhere you can type. Notes, emails, letters, referrals. You talk instead of typing.

  • Ambient AI for consultations, saving you time writing them up.

  • A workflow engine. Documents are routed through several steps automatically.

  • Coding based on rules rather than a model. Nothing is pre-selected. The clinician confirms every code.

  • Patient information is stripped on the practice machine. It never leaves the building and is never stored.

  • It runs on phones and tablets. Home visits and nursing home rounds get written up as you go.

  • It is not only for clinicians. It can also be used to record meetings, support the production of minutes and action points.

  • It is one product, not several. Dictation, speech recognition, workflows and ambient AI in one subscription.

In short, Lexacom brings dictation, consultations, coding and workflow into one place, so documents are managed accurately and efficiently.

Which brings me back to the title. Lexacom have been in the health tech business for 26 years. Plenty of companies can tell you what their product will do. Fewer can show you what it has already done, through several changes in NHS structure, funding cycles, and procurement.

They have a track record which is undeniable.

Lastly, let’s talk money. Lexacom costs 24p to 36p per patient per year. Pricing is set at organisation level, which gives practices more flexibility and makes it easier to compare against other products on the market.
